There's a neat picture of John Melkencamp with an old maple Guild in American Rock Songs. Page 19.

Is that an F50?

Hard to say without pics but I understand scanning and posting here could be a problem, I can't do it either.
If it's got a G shield, and you can tell for sure it's an archback (no braces visible through soundhole) it's likely an F50 or JF65; if Chesterfield probably an F40, or JF30.

Haven't see the photo, but it might have been the guitar in this one:

If that's the one you saw, it looks like an F-44.

Just for the record, I love hard copy books and magazines, libraries, bookstores, and my morning newspaper delivered to my door - always have, always will...

Perhaps I can help keep you employed, Al.

If that's an actual question, I may not have the 100% correct answer, but I can offer you the following approximate (not very scientific) suggestion:

The guitar looks like it's from the mid-'80s and it still looks very pale, so the guitar is probably not more than a year old. Did a quick Wikipedia search and it turns out that Mr. Mellenkamp was born in 1951, so I would say he's probably somewhere around 35 years old in that particular photo.

Sincerely,

Yep, That's the one.

Wonder how old he was in that picture?
When I was in college, during my sophomore year, '81-'82, the programming board was debating what band to bring in for homecoming. One of the candidates was this guy called Johnny Cougar, whom nobody had ever heard of. One of his early incarnations.

I think Poco was who they eventually booked.

So he was Johnny Cougar in '81, and in the same year Christie Brinkley was on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the third time in a row.

And now in their 60's they are dating!

Just thought I'd throw in a celebrity veer... :nevreness:
