I have a pet hypothesis that all the people who listen to those stations now weren't listening to, and getting sick of, songs that were "played to death" back in the day...back when they did that kind of thing on AM radio.
Remember AM?
Anyway, this consumer group doesn't actually love music, they love being reminded of their youth.
SO the same old stuff is played to death all over again.
The more things change, the more they stay the same....

I shared a similar link on Facebook that I think was from the same site, and think it should really be called "Why Classic Rock Radio Sucks". There's so much great new music being made out there, but thanks to commercial radio being controlled by Clear Channel and a handful of other huge conglomerates, very few will hear it unless they subscribe to satellite or are lucky enough to have a good college station within their reception range. For the rest, it's the same 300 songs over and over. It's sure a far cry from the free form radio I grew up on :(

301 songs. You forgot "Hotel California". Or is it "Stairway to Heaven"?

There's another couple of songs I can't listen to anymore, but at least I liked "Stairway to Heaven" somewhere along the way. Even that was so long ago I can't remember.

I agree with the idea that some of us are simply sick of these songs, having heard them so much. As I flip through "classic rock" stations it's usually the same songs, although there are a few independent stations I listen to that play some different stuff. And today's top 40 for me is no longer an option.

That's why I have my 6 CD changer ready to go!

But I must admit that sometimes it's nice to hear a song from the past, evoking whatever memories go with it. The only overplayed song from when I was a youth that I simply can never hear again is "American Pie".

My problem is that "classic rock radio" isn't my classic-rock, 'geezer that I am...I enjoy 60's on 6 on Sirius as it is the music I grew up to...even if some are songs I didn't like...

Keyboard-based disco-shred from the 80's just isn't my thought of "classic,' though I understand it is for many...funny though, I have the money to spend now, why aren't the advertisers trying to suck me in???

I am eternally grateful that I am within transmitter range of WXPN. For the rest of you, check out their internet streams. Highs in the 70s is a particular delight, dredging up obscure nuggets from that decade.

One interesting thing I've noticed is now that I've ripped my music library to both a nice little Astell & Kern portable player and an Olive music server, I listen more. The physical act of loading a CD in a tray or putting an LP on a turntable is replaced by the much simpler point and tap selection process. I even got to educate a daughter's boyfriend on the musical history of "All Along the Watchtower", starting with the Bob Dylan studio and live versions, followed by Hendrix, U2, Dave Mason and Dave Matthews. Of course, I think he was just humoring me.

Vancouver has the best classic rock station for miles around. We have a local station that tries to be like Rock 101 but they fall short.

http://www.rock101.com/

It's my go-to station whenever I'm behind the wheel or in my shop, except on weekends when it's NPR time. :apple:

I love a lot of core classic rock, but interestingly in this article, where I live, the most played group is Foreigner, whose music I hate. Fortunately when I do tune into the local classic rock radio station, they almost always seem to be playing something else, with a (perceived) emphasis on Queen, Pink Floyd, and/or AC/DC. Go figure. Maybe it's the times of day I tune in?

The Cars, Def Leppard, Journey and U2, while good, are not classic rock to me. My range is mid to late 60's through the lat e 70's...Jefferson Airplane, CSN, Hendrix, etc through Boston, early Foreigner, etc. I still love all of that music and enjoy hearing it despite the millions of times I have heard it all, but jazz is my new classic rock, and that is mostly where it's at for me these days.

The odds are your "Classic Rock" staion is owned by Clear Channel, as Sandy pointed out, as they went on a massive acquisition campaign back in the late '00s.
Look at the numbers in that article, 2200-some odd songs in 37,000 some-odd plays, and they weren't all played the same number of times.
What are the odds, when I only listen to "Classic Rock" about an hour per week in my car, that I'm gonna hear "Hotel California" 10 times in 6 months? Same goes for Pink Floyd and Foreigner too, as you mention. And with Floyd, it's ALWAYS one of the "Wall" cuts, right?
Bill asked, "Why aren't the advertisers trying to suck me in?" Actually, we're probably just outside the "spending demographic" now, but I'm getting a clue when all the commercials are about sleep number mattresses, and picking the right investment broker, or re-financing a mortgage, and that was Clear Channel's goal: present a monster to the advertisers to strongarm 'em on the rates, becasue that's what this business has always been about, right?
It ain't "Classic Rock", it's "Corporate Rock".
Speaking of reeling in a demographic, I got introduced to conservative talk radio as I was surfing the dial shortly before the first Bush-Obama campaign and stopped on an AM station that was playing the Dead's first single: "Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion". WHEN's the last time anybody here ever heard THAT on the radio? In the next 10 minutes I was treated to Country Joe and the Fish("Love" and "Superbird"), the Airplane (and it wasn't "Somebody to Love", it was "Blues From an Airplane"), the Seeds, the Standells, and a couple of other obscure summer of love one hit wonders even I'd forgotten about.
And that station was locked into my presets.
Next morning, here's a conservative talk show host ranting about how we've got too much government.
Yep, we were the counter-culture, we were protesting back then, and savvy political analysts know there's nobody more conservative than an reformed radical.
It lasted about 3 months and then no more counter-culture music.
In fact there was a complete format change to sports radio.
Follow the bucks.
SO now that I think about it, maybe we oughta be grateful there's at least a few diamonds scattered here and there in the Coroporate Rock playlists.
Waitaminnit, like a grateul dog licking the hand that chooses its scraps?
NOT.

Hmmm, did I miss something?
In alternate reality #22 there are actually 3 campaigns, but the Beatles never existed, and Jimi Hendrix hosts late night commercials for Time-Life music collections...
and I'm still a postbot who somehow submits stuff before he's done editing.

Guess my head is just stuck in the 60s and 70s. I still like the old stuff; that's where my roots are... I associate those tunes with my wilder, youthful days and they bring back lots of memories.

Its not like I listen to classic rock stations only. In fact, I spend most of my FM time listening to Texas or Americana tunes most closely related to the country genre. The wife keeps her dial tuned to Christian or conservative stations and classic rock, so I get a bit of diversity when she drives...

Each Thursday evening throughout the summer the local city park hosts a concert series with bands representing various genres. There's lots of good classic rock and Texas country available; last week an 80s/90s retro band put on a pretty good show. We're going to the Tejano concert tonight which should be lots of fun. Fortunately, only one Thursday evening is dedicated to hip-hop. Think I'll mow the yard or change oil in the car that evening...

I will humbly admit to actually having grown to like a couple of Foreigner, and Boston, and Kansas and Aerosmith tunes, and others who escape me now, thanks to "Classic Rock" stations.
Another note: a couple of today's classic rock stalwarts got their start on what was then considered pop, commercialized AM radio:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and the Police.
My Classic Rock playlist would lean heavily on garage bands/60's pop but I'd throw in some stuff from the early "progressive" era that was too popular in its day and now is rarely if ever heard.
Okay, I now propose the LTG Classic Rock playlist and just to get started, here's a few "chestnuts".
This list is shamelessly intended to push as many nostalgia buttons for as many of our over 55 members as possible:
1: "Dirty Water"/the Standells
2: "I Can See For Miles"/the Who
3: "Pushin' Too Hard"/the Seeds
4: "Saturday's Child"/the Monkees
5: "Fresh Garbage"/Spirit
6: "Les Brers in A minor"/the Allman Brothers
7: "Hocus Pocus"/Focus
8: "Watcher Over Skies"/Genesis
9: "Good Times, Bad Times"/Led Zeppelin
10: "Locomotive Breath"/ Jethro Tull
11: "I Can't Keep From Cryin' Sometimes"/ 10 Years After
12: "Telstar"/the Ventures
13: "Bluebird"/ Buffalo Springfield
14: "Break On Through"/the Doors
15: "She's Not There"/the Zombies
16: "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night"/ the Electric Prunes
17: "Liar Liar"/the Castaways
18: "We Aiin't Got Nothin' Yet"/Blues Magoos
19: "Cinnamon Girl"/Neil Young
20: "Mr. You're A Better Man Than I"/the Yardbirds
21: "I'm So Glad"/ Cream
22: "Summer In The City"/the Lovin' Spoonful
23: "Paint it Black"/the Rolling Stones
24: "Paperback Writer"/the Beatles
25: "Ride My Seesaw"/ Moody Blues
26: "Rock'n'Roll Star"/the Byrds
27: "When I was Young"/the Animals
28: "You Keep Me Hangin' On"/ Vanilla Fudge
29: "Sunshine Superman"/Donovan
AND OF COURSE, WHO COULD FORGET POSSIBLY THE FIRST PLAYED-TO-DEATH EXTENDED HEAVY ANTHEM:
30: "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida"/ Iron Butterfly

Additions are invited. NO rules, except that it can't be a current "Classic Rock" staple.
Also "Smoke On the Water" is automatically disqualified even if you haven't heard it for a year.

Just got home from from the concert. I want an accordion...
