Just compared a Guild GAD 150 to a Martin d28 and the Guild sounded better to me and a couple of people
in the store including my daughter who I blind tested .She picked the Guild right away,
I really want an american made guild d50 but the GAD really impressed me.
what do you all think?

Consider the GAD the starter drug and think of all the fun you'll have while saving up for a New Hartford model.

Can't beat a GAD for the price. Solid wood guitar built to Guild specifications. I owned a D-140, and liked it a lot.

But a vintage Westerly D-50 is at a whole different level, for maybe twice the money of a similar GAD. A huge, powerful thing, with tone and playability that screams quality with every pluck of a string.

One option would be to buy a GAD, save, sell the GAD, buy a D-50. That's what I did.

I'm guessing the one you played was a D-150? I've played both the D-150 and F-150R and was duly impressed by both. Had I not been looking for the smaller 30 series size body, I probably would have walked out with an F-150R instead of an F-130R...although the F-130R is a fantastic guitar.

As suggested, for the price, go with the D-150 and save for that U.S. made Guild. Who knows, you may just hang into the GAD. :)

FWIW, I now own 2 GAD guitars - a 2010 GAD 30R, and a 2011 GAD F212 - and both are keepers! The 2005 - 2011 GAD's had a lot more cool stuff - bone nut and saddle, ebony bridge and end pins, wood bindings, Grover tuners - but the newer GAD's are great as well - just less well appointed. However, they still play and sound great!

Structurally the GAD has scalloped braces…something that the standard D28 does not. Scalloping of the braces is an upcharge for Martin FWIW. I have had a few GADs over the years all of which are gone now. For those of us who become addicted to guitars, the GADs represent a good gateway drug. But if you look at the majority, we addicts do not hang on to them very long.

Its not uncommon for a lightly braced and scalloped guitar to sound sweeter and more complex than a Martin Standard model initially.
Get back to me in 30 years if you still have it.

I decided on saving for a real D50 or maybe in the near future another D25
I would probabloy regret buying a Chinese Guild and not buying American.
